Insurance Discovery Call Script Framework

Explore expert guides, software reviews, automation strategies, and proven marketing insights designed to help insurance agents streamline operations, generate more leads, and grow their business.

A strong insurance conversation should not sound like a memorized pitch. The purpose of a discovery call is to understand why the person responded, what they are trying to solve, and what next step makes sense.

1. Open With Permission

Example: “Thanks for taking a few minutes with me. Before we get into options, would it be okay if I ask a few questions so I understand what you are trying to accomplish?”

2. Ask Why They Responded

Example: “What made you decide to look into this now?”

This gives the prospect room to explain the trigger in their own words.

3. Understand the Current Situation

Ask only the questions needed to understand the problem and determine the appropriate next step. Avoid interrogating the prospect or racing into a recommendation before you have context.

4. Clarify Priorities

Example: “When you think about the outcome you want, what matters most to you?”

5. Reflect Back What You Heard

Example: “So if I heard you correctly, your main concern is ___, and you would like to avoid ___. Is that right?”

This gives the prospect a chance to correct misunderstandings before you move forward.

6. Agree on the Next Step

The next step might be gathering information, scheduling a longer review, completing an application, or simply sending material for the client to consider. Keep it explicit.

Important Boundary

Scripts should support a compliant conversation, not override licensing, suitability, carrier, disclosure, or product-specific requirements. Use the framework as a communication aid and adapt it to the rules that apply to your line of business.

Bottom Line

The best discovery script is structured enough to keep the conversation productive and flexible enough to let the prospect talk. Ask, listen, summarize, and agree on the next step.
